For WordCamp Granada 2024, the new Wapuu mascot created by Ohia, named Wajee, takes a bit of inspiration from the beloved 2019 design that featured the traditional Fajalauza pattern, a tribute to Granada’s rich cultural heritage. The name Wajee, derived from Arabic, means «happy,» which aligns perfectly with the cheerful and inclusive spirit of #WCGR24.
However, the 2024 Wapuu introduces a modern twist by combining 2019 elements with classic WordPress Wapuu elements. The Wapuu’s yellow body, a staple of the mascot, has been preserved and works seamlessly with the event’s color scheme for this year. This choice creates a sense of continuity, tying the mascot back to the recognizable and iconic design language of WordPress while ensuring it feels fresh and relevant to this year’s event.
The 2024 Wapuu, much like its predecessor, embodies the fusion of Granada’s local identity with the global WordPress community. The yellow of Wapuu’s body contrasts beautifully with the cool blue and green tones of the Fajalauza pattern, creating a dynamic and eye-catching design that feels both timeless and contemporary. It’s a perfect representation of the WordCamp Granada spirit, celebrating local culture while embracing the worldwide connectivity and creativity of WordPress.
Multiple designs were provided to the #WCGR24 team and Wajee was the one we loved best.
If you have extra time in Granada don’t miss out on the opportunity to visit some of the factories where Fajalauza pottery is made. You might just find the exact tiles that inspired this year’s logo.
